Tooth whitening is a simple and effective way to significantly enhance your smile. Tooth whitening (Bleaching) lightens teeth and helps to remove stains and discoloration. Whitening is among the most popular cosmetic dental procedures because it can greatly improve how your teeth look.

How Does Tooth Whitening Work?

Tooth whitening is a simple process. Whitening products contain one of two tooth bleaches (hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide). These bleaches break stains into smaller pieces, which make the color less concentrated and your teeth brighter.

Does Whitening Work On All Teeth?

No, which is why it’s important to talk to us before deciding to whiten your teeth, as whiteners may not correct all types of discoloration. For example, yellow teeth will probably bleach well, brown teeth may not respond as well and teeth with gray tones may not bleach at all. Whitening will not work on caps, veneers, crowns or fillings. It also won’t be effective if your tooth discoloration is caused by medications or a tooth injury.

After bleaching, generally your teeth become whiter by 2 or 3 shades; however the result cannot be predicted before the treatment.

What Are My Whitening Options?

If you are a candidate, there are two ways to put the shine back in your smile:

In-Office Bleaching
This procedure is called chairside bleaching and usually requires only one office visit. We apply a protective gel to your gums, to protect them. Bleach is then applied to the teeth. A special light is used to enhance the action of the whitening agent.

At-Home Bleaching
This is typically done, by using a gel placed in a tray that fits on your teeth. The concentration of the bleaching agent is lower than what we would use in the office.

Are There Any Side Effects From Teeth Whitening?

Some people who use teeth whiteners may experience tooth sensitivity. In most cases the sensitivity is temporary.

Whitening is not a one-time procedure. It will need to be repeated from time to time if you want to maintain the brighter color. Contact our office to see what option will best suit your needs.
